www.cbr.com/report-sydney-sweeney-playing-spider-woman-madame-web/REPORT: Sydney Sweeney Is Playing Marvel's Second Spider-Woman in Madame Web BY NOAH DOMINGUEZ Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney's character in the upcoming Sony Spider-Man Universe film Madame Web has reportedly been revealed. According to reliable industry insider Jeff Sneider of The Hot Mic podcast, Sweeney is portraying "the second" incarnation of Spider-Woman in Madame Web. Marvel Comics' second in-continuity Spider-Woman was, of course, Julia Carpenter, who succeeded Jessica Drew. Julia's apparent involvement in Sony's Madame Web film is especially noteworthy, seeing as how she is also the second (and current) Madame Web in the comics, having succeeded the late Cassandra Webb. Madame Web is currently slated to release in theaters next February, with production having wrapped this past January. The film stars Dakota Johnson as the eponymous clairvoyant, who first appeared in 1980's Amazing Spider-Man #210. Last March, Sweeney also joined the cast of Madame Web in an undisclosed role. Up until now, it's been unclear which version of Madame Web Johnson would be playing -- Cassandra Webb or Julia Carpenter. However, if Sweeney is indeed playing Julia -- as Sneider reports -- this would seem to confirm that Johnson is playing Cassandra. Who Is Marvel's Julia Carpenter? Created by Jim Shooter and Mike Zeck, Julia Carpenter/Spider-Woman made her first full appearance in 1984's Marvel Super Heroes #7. Initially, Julia sported a black and white suit that served as the inspiration for Peter Parker/Spider-Man's symbiote suit (which the original wall-crawler acquired in Secret Wars #8). Julia later became known as Arachne within the pages of Ms. Marvel in 2006 before ultimately taking up the mantle of Madame Web in 2010's Amazing Spider-Man #637. If Sneider's report is accurate, Julia Carpenter will make her live-action debut when Madame Web hits theaters next year. However, the character will actually make her big-screen debut a little earlier -- in Sony's anticipated animated film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which opens this coming June. Marvel's original in-continuity Spider-Woman, Jessica Drew, is one of the major players in the Spider-Verse sequel. However, the film's official poster confirms that Julia Carpenter's Spider-Woman will make an appearance as well. Madame Web Enters the Spider-Verse In addition to Johnson and Sweeney, Sony's Madame Web film stars Adam Scott, Emma Roberts, Celeste O'Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps and Zosia Mamet. An official synopsis for the Sony/Marvel feature reads as follows: "The film will be an origin story of the clairvoyant, whose psychic abilities allow her to see within the spider world." As for Sweeney, the Euphoria star seems set to make a name for herself in the world of comic book adaptations at Sony. In addition to playing a key role in Madame Web, Sweeney is attached to play the lead role in the studio's upcoming big-screen adaptation of Jean-Claude Forest's Barbarella. Paramount Pictures previously released a Barbarella film starring Jane Fonda in 1968. Madame Web opens in theaters on Feb. 16, 2024.
